The use of heated tile floor systems have become more popular lately with exposure from the many home improvement television shows that are aired on cable network channels like HGTV and DIY. People that live in colder climates have always know about one form or another of the radiant heat flooring but many have forgone this process due to either its cost, or in the past it's high maintenance factor. Many years ago the only form of floor heating was through the use of a networked set of hot water pipes that installed in the sub-flooring of a master bath or throughout the home.

The use of heated ceramic tile and towel bar in bathrooms really got this technology off the ground in Europe after World War II, since many people especially the ones that were advanced in years found it uncomfortable to navigate those cold floors, and bathtubs on winter mornings. This ingenious invention of floor heating came across to Canada and trickled down into the lower forty-eight eventually. As this was a costly process, and required a homeowner to have their bathrooms to be torn out to have this heating system installed, it was too costly for the average family to afford such a luxury.

When electric radiant heated floor tile systems were introduced in the mid 1990s they were still costly, but were less expensive to install, and there was little worry of damage, since there were no longer any of those miniature hot water pipes that could possibly rupture, and floor the rest of the house. Along the way floor technology improved, and installer, and flooring manufacturers learned about issues that prevented this system from working properly. One particular problem was that if the heating elements were not properly insulated from a cement foundation or a wood sub floor the heat would escape in the wrong direction, and would never warm up the house.

Homeowners also found that having heated flooring installed, they did not run their gas, or propane furnaces as often, and their sinuses, and asthma issues did not flare up as much during the winter months when they did not run forced air heating systems. Healthcare professionals got wind of this and started openly suggesting this as alternative to all of their patients that especially had breathing difficulties. Indoor pollution is very serious for a home's inhabitants, and when it is constantly being launched by a central heating and cooling system, those particles are being breathed in by everyone in the household. Anything from mold sports, to dust mites are always floating through the duct work, and open spaced of a home when these centralized units are running.

The newest line up of heated tile floor models are compartmentalized or broken up into separate units for each room in the home. Each having it's own power source, and thermostat, and countdown timer. This affords the luxury of each person of being able to dial in their own comfort level of heat during the day or night, and can have it shut off after they fall asleep if they like.
