Gutter cleaning is one area of maintenance that we must include  in our household maintenance program, to protect our valuable real estate property. For some, it might seem important until an overflow is noticed, but if we want to maintain the value of our home, cleaning must be regular as damage from ignoring this process can lead to costly damage before you know it. If you are doing the job yourself, be sure to do it correctly.  Debris cannot be left behind and as little bit can start a dam that will cause flooding. But, if done with efficiency, you will reap the benefits  of a clean the gutter. You do not need to  hire a person to do the job if you know the basics. To help you make the job easy and efficient, we will give you some tips.

Gutter Cleaning

The first consideration is the height of the gutter. To access the roof, you need to have a ladder that is both tall enough and sturdy enough for you to reach the gutter. You must be cautious when you  lean the ladder on the gutter to avoid bending and/or breakage.

You will need to have a bucket with you or a garbage bag. Place it on the in a manner that provides easy access for the  removed dirt from the gutter. If you will use a garbage bag, you can easily drop it down when it becomes full, but it is clumsy to fill. If you have a leaf blower available at home, you may use it to blow off some of the leaves and debris out of the gutter. Be careful with your body positioning as you will be carrying a bulky machine on top of the roof that might cause an accident if you lose your  balance. Remove all unnecessary materials by hand. You may also use tools such as a large spoon or a garden trowel. Substances that are a caked on  matter must be removed by wetting it down and then scraping it off by using a trowel or similar tool such as a putty knife.  Be careful not to damage the gutter.

Once the gutter is completely clean of debris, check the downspouts. You have to check that they are not clogged. If you found that there are clogs, be careful in removing them, because you could cause damage. You may use a stick to unclog it, or a strong stream of water. Be careful not to dislodge the drainpipe from the wall. Be extra careful in cleaning it.

Next you need  to flush the gutter with water. This also serves to check the gutter for leakage. If it leaks, fix it right away.  A silicone caulk is waterproof and will last as long as the gutter in most cases. According to most cleaning supplies info sites, gutter cleaning should be done seasonally, depending upon your buildup. This will help to avoid clogging and flooding and possible other damage to your home.  One might consider gutter guards as well, as this will considerably lessen the maintenance requirements of your gutter system.  They are easy to install for most do it yourself folks.

My mother found a great tool that fastens onto our hose of our shop vac that is a one-piece pvc "J" shaped gutter cleaning tool. We now vacuum our gutters from the ground instead of using ladders and stay on the ground. It sure is a safer means of rain gutter cleaning. We bought it on-line and are very happy with it. It called a gutter clutter buster and I it sure makes this job easier.
