Indoor Tanning Lotion - Some dangers
By jecrawlipp
We have all heard the phrase "A Nice Healthy Tan" before. Many of us want one. A large number of folks use indoor tanning lotion as a means to getting the desirable tanned body and keeping it throughout the year. Unfortunately for all of us baking away on planet earth, tanning lotions don't do a good job of protecting our skin from the damaging effects overexposure to sunlight can on it. It would be wonderful if it did, but it really doesn't.
Indoor Tanning Lotion Facts
What these lotions will do is decrease the time it takes for your skin to become darker. Although they may decrease the time you need to spend in the sun to get your desired effect, protection from sun damage is not their purpose. The more we learn, the tougher it becomes to believe that there is such a thing as a healthy tan. There is a vast selection of indoor tanning lotions on the market today which claim to be safe, and a method to safely tanning. The lotions may very well be safe, but the UV rays never are safe for your skin. Without any real protection, the UVA rays, which are what most tanning bed lamps use to produce the perfect tan, can wreak havoc on our skin.
In fact, UVA radiation has been shown to have a correlation with the development of some melanoma. The rays we get outside, which are UVB rays and tend to be more prone to burning your skin, with prolonged exposure are minimally better. They can, however, be linked to poor immune system responses and as we all know from the leathery skin of chronic tanning junkies, aging prematurely. Most of the time we don't give much thought to the long term effects of overexposure to UV rays. Most often we are concerned about sidestepping the immediate threat of getting the painful sunburn. Studies in recent years have shown us that the risk of burning, under a tanning lamp as well, is more or less a result of our skin type. The obvious deductions would hold true in this case. Those of us with darker skin don't burn as fast as those with fair skin. The fair skinned beauties do have some hope though, because using the correct tanning lotion will reduce the risk somewhat. If you are one of the fair skin persuasion, it is in your interest to know that the best indoor tanning lotion you can use will contain some protection. Always make sure you are applying a lotion with a decent SPF factor. It will not eliminate your chance of burning or damaging your skin. It will only lessen the chance.
Tanning Lotion Minus The Sun
A sunless tanning lotion is usually the safest choice in attaining a tan. It is also called a bronzer, in case you hear that term used when referring to a certain kind of lotion. Amongst the vast array of lotions available, you will find products designed specifically to be used with a tanning bed and some without one. In fact, there are more of them for getting a great tan without using a bed than there are for tanning with a bed. Many of us remember the orange glow that our friends who tried the sunless lotions would be stuck with for days. I'm sure this has persuaded a bunch of folks to avoid them, if for no other reason than to avoid the ridicule that can come along with a misstep like this. Over the years, since the creation of the sunless tanning products, there is little doubt they have become much better, and the worry of turning orange or having those unsightly streaks is minimal at best.
Final Tanning Lotion Thoughts
You will probably need to experiment some to find one that works best for you, since there are a wide range of varying shades. If you are willing to invest some time into researching other people's experience by looking up some indoor tanning lotion reviews you will be able to narrow down the test group to a reasonable size. Our obsession with being tan is not likely to end anytime soon. The ultra popular people in our society continue to sport the dangerous look, and we follow because we want to be pretty and popular too. So be sure to take the necessary precautions before your skin takes the brunt of the fallout for wanting to look good.

A lot of times people at the tanning salon can help you choose a lotion and they have samples you can try out. However, I would suggest buying tanning lotion online because the salons will jack the price up.
Tanning lotions are great if you are tanning in a tanning bed. I find that there are some that work better than others. You can also get some tanning lotions that have an SPF in them which are great for your face. I agree with Kelly that you should either buy them online on at a beauty supply store. They will be significantly cheaper. Thanks for the great hub!
Fantastic article, I also agree that a tanning lotion can provide excellent protection on indoor tanning beds. I've wrote about some of the risks of UV Rays here: http://hubpages.com/hub/UV-Rays-A-Holiday-Accident I'd be grateful if you read it.
